…and how I made a website based on my faith

My name is Sai Kit and I currently live in Hong Kong, China.

I am a Chinese Canadian. I am a Christian enthusiast. I love to read books, practice spiritual disciplines, and reflect on life. I hope to write my own Bible commentary someday. I was born in Hong Kong but immigrated into Canada 17 years later, so I have two passports, legally.

One of my biggest dreams is to meditate on God’s words day and night. But in reality, life is full of obstacles and our wills are unreliable. To fulfill this dream is extremely hard, because I have to deal with obligations such as school works, and financial responsibilities, and on top of that, many other distractions.

I have been praying about this for 12 years. Many time I had been disappointed by my lack of self-discipline.

I knew that God has allowed these obstacles to stand in my way, so I could understand our weaknesses as humans! But through all of these struggles I have found precious insights about callings, finance, self-discipline, time management, learning, career, relationship, and more: If life offers you lemon, make lemonade!

As my insights slowly accumulated, I realized that God has been putting the together the answer to my prayer, gradually for the last 12 years.

This site is part of God’s answer to my prayer. Bible studies work best with interactions. And having a readership for my work motivate me to persist and give me valuable feedback that stimulate my learning process.

Through writing Christian articles for this site, my ideas are able to converge and become crystal clear. It also serves as an accountability mechanism that keep me focus on my daily spiritual practices.

How did I become a Christian

I received Jesus Christ as my personal savior in between age 6 to 8. I don’t exactly remember. To this date, almost none of my relatives are Christians. Only one family on my mom’s side is a Christian family.

Since I was a child, spirituality and faith had been a major subject of contemplation to me. There were just too many different belief systems in the world, and I didn’t know which faith to believe in…

One time, I prayed to God, and I told Him I trusted that He had the power and was the omniscient one, but I was not, so I would let Him direct my path. I was so cautious with my wordings that it was like signing a contract with a business partner.

I told Him that, if by the time I died I was still confused about who He was, then it wasn’t my fault.

Shortly after that prayer, days or months later —I don’t remember because, to a child, days could feel like months —I received Jesus Christ as my personal savior.

Fast Forward to University

Before graduating from the University, I knew very clearly that God was calling me to start some sort of full time ministry. But the vision was still vague at the time. My major focus would include: Christian leadership, Christian relationship, worship music, and Bible study.

I thought I might be able to get on with some jobs, save some money, and choose a seminary to study because it was how things usually were for other full time Christian ministers.

As graduation drew near, I campaigned for an executive position of the student union and won. It was a major leap of faith in my life. I was the underdog, because: English was my second language; I was a new immigrant (in Canada for 7 years); and I lacked experience (Other candidates were way more experienced)

Within 12 months, I graduated from the University successfully, quit the executive position 3 months before the end of my tenure due to conscience (A spiritual victory. I will talk more about it in my future posts), and started off a long anticipated adventure in the real world.

Finding the Path to My Dream in The Real World

After leaving Campus, I took 2 months off for vacation in my home town. I was going to gym everyday, enjoying quality time with God, and watching good TV series (Asian love drama. I dropped a lot of tears).

Then I signed up with an MLM financial service company. They were telling people how they were offering them a business opportunity, that with them you were building a business for yourself but not by yourself, and the typical MLM sales pitches you would hear many times if you had joined any MLM company before.

I thought working in the world of personal finance, plus MLM experience, would give me leadership experience, real world experience, and financial knowledge. I believed that would equip me to be a minister that understand his sheep!

I had informed all my friends, relatives, and strangers I met about my company, but had little success in term of making real money. Selling is hard! But I was able to understand more about the truth behind the financial industry, and financial hardship of families in North America.

Because of the difficulties, it didn’t take long for me to search on the Internet to learn more about selling. Thankfully, I met a bunch of guru and marketers on the Web…

I learned that selling is a science, and that marketing is the key to many successful salesmen. I had seen that many of them, although not as energetic and aggressive as the typical network marketers, were able grow a huge business in any field.

Later, I learned that some very successful network marketers also used many of the marketing techniques, but for some reasons they still used the worn-out, traditional MLM training to teach their downlines.

I had devoured a lot of materials about business, selling, entrepreneurship, investment, economy, and the whole nine yard: I wanted to get my hand on everything that pertained to financial well being of an individual.

I found that the more I searched, the more I saw hidden connections under these topics that traced back to spirituality and biblical principles.

The conclusion: the answers to personal finance are in the bible!

If one doesn’t go back to God, problems such as overspending, wrong business decisions, greed, and financial stresses will only persist in one’s life.

And, as time went by, I slowly realized that I just couldn’t put my hand to write articles on personal finance anymore… I didn’t have personal experience with starting a successful business, nor had I made any money through investment!

So I had changed the themes for my SBI! site twice during the first 13 months, but I still hadn’t done much with the site.

After much soul searching, I decided to practice what I preach: Make money by doing what I love.
